What does an NOx sensor do?
A NOx sensor is mounted behind the catalytic converter in the exhaust of a car. The NOx sensor measures the amount of nitrogen in the exhaust gases after they have been in the catalytic converter. The main function of a NOx sensor is to reduce harmful nitrogen emissions. A NOx sensor has two 'chambers'. In the first chamber, the amount of oxygen in the exhaust is kept at 10 ppm. This is done by a pump flow. In the second chamber, the so-called “NOx reaction” occurs. This means that the NOx sensor separates the nitrogen and oxygen in the exhaust, by using a catalytically active electrode. Installing an NOx sensor in your vehicle ensures that the nitrogen gases are stored, measured and converted into less harmful substances.
